Council is committed to delivering the demolition safely, responsibly and with minimal disruption to the community while ensuring the site is managed appropriately for the future.
The facility has reached the end of its useful life and Council is progressing plans for its demolition as part of its responsibility to manage community assets safely and sustainably.
At the May 2026 Council Meeting, Councillors considered the condition of the facility and determined demolition was the most appropriate course of action. A report tabled at that meeting(PDF, 22MB) said renewing the building, or maintaining the unused facility, was not a cost-effective long-term option.
Council is currently preparing tender documentation and engaging contractors to undertake the works. A demolition timeline will be communicated once a contractor has been appointed.
Council and the appointed contractor will work to minimise impacts on neighbouring properties and the community. Residents will be advised of any temporary changes to access, noise, traffic or other activities associated with the works.
Demolition works will be carried out by appropriately qualified contractors in accordance with all relevant health, safety and environmental requirements. Contractors will be required to provide detailed safe work methodologies as part of the project.
Where possible material will be recycled for other uses. As mould is prevalent in the building, the recovery and disposal of materials will need to be guided by health standards.
The site will be returned to open space, but no decisions have been made regarding future use. The demolition will allow Council to consider future opportunities for the land in consultation with the community and stakeholders.
