Port Fairy has been named the fourth best town in Australia in the Australian Traveller Top 100 Towns list, ranking as the highest placed Victorian town and receiving the national number one ranking in the Festivals and Events category. The rankings were announced nationally as part of Australian Traveller’s Top 100 Towns feature, including coverage on the TODAY Show.
The recognition highlights Port Fairy’s reputation as one of Australia’s leading regional destinations, celebrated for its vibrant events calendar, coastal beauty, rich history, and strong sense of community.
Moyne Shire Council Mayor Jordan Lockett said the recognition reflected generations of community contribution and pride.
“For thousands of years this place has been shaped by people, stories, and the ancient landscape of the ocean and river that are part of life here.” Cr Lockett said.
“We’re thrilled to be recognised, and this achievement belongs to the whole community. It reflects the passion and effort that make our town so special.
“It is so well deserved and a credit to the many legends over many years who have helped build the events and community spirit we’re known for.
“The Port Fairy Folk Festival is about to celebrate 50 years, Moyneyana lights up our summers, Winter Weekends bring energy to the colder months, the Port Fairy Jazz Festival and Spring Music Festival continue to attract visitors from far and wide, the Literary Weekend continues to grow, and so many other phenomenal events bring our town to life year after year.
“From the checkouts at the supermarket to the chefs in our kitchens, from volunteers, artists, event organisers and the local businesses that call Port Fairy home, this recognition belongs to everyone who helps make this community what it is.”
Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism General Manager Liz Price said the result reflected the strength of the broader region and visitor experience.
“This is a wonderful recognition for Port Fairy, one of the incredible destinations on offer in the Great Ocean Road region,” Ms Price said.
“Being named first in the festivals and events category acknowledges the amazing work of the dedicated individuals and groups in the community that coordinate Port Fairy’s events.
“Visitors that slow down and explore the whole region are rewarded with vibrant communities, exceptional food and wine, and of course, stunning landscapes.”
