Moyne Shire Council is responsible for maintaining and managing 2961 kilometres of local roads and each year carries out a comprehensive program of renewal and resealing works.
Resealing is an important part of the road maintenance program and helps prolong the lifespan of the sealed roads. While the road being resealed may look like it is in good condition, inspections may have found cracks or other defects.
Resealing stops water getting into those cracks and into the road base which causes bigger, more expensive problems down the track.
Council’s resealing program includes treatment for roads as part of a prescribed maintenance plan and those identified through regular inspections.
The renewal program is more comprehensive work which may involve the reconstruction of the road surface, base or drainage. This program of works is informed through council's roads management plan and through inspections.
Each year the major part of Council's budget is spent renewing and maintaining those roads – which includes a reseal program and a renewal program.
Council’s 2022/23 Budget included more than $10 million towards road, bridge and drainage works. Council also sources funding from State and Federal Government to complete works.
These programs include Roads to Recovery and the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Fund.
Council has also successfully obtained $11 million from the Federal Government’s Remote Road Upgrade Pilot Program which will fund renewal and widening works on the Chatsworth-Bolac Road and the Hamilton-Chatsworth Road over the next two years.
