Community advocacy and strong support from Moyne Shire Council have paid off, with the Victorian Government committing $500,000 towards the Koroit Youth Space project.

The funding will support delivery of several core components of the project, including a pump track, an accessible footpath network, seating and shelter upgrades, and refurbishment of the existing court area.

Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the funding was a significant milestone for a project that had been driven by the Koroit community.

"The Koroit Youth Space is one of Council's advocacy priorities and we've worked hard to pitch it to government because we know the difference the project will make,” he said

"With around 30 per cent of Koroit's population aged between 10 and 24, it's important we provide the kinds of spaces and activities young people want to use and can be proud of.

"We're absolutely pumped to see the Victorian Government back the project with a $450,000 funding commitment. It's an awesome outcome for Koroit and means we can deliver an epic space that young people and families will enjoy for years to come."

The Victorian Government funding, delivered through Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, builds on Council's budget allocation of $400,000 and over $100,000 raised through local community efforts.

Cr Lockett thanked Jacinta Ermacora MP for her support in securing the funding.

Cr Lockett also acknowledged the contribution of local community advocate Ray Kaynes, whose commitment and leadership have played a major role in advancing the project.

"Ray has been instrumental in building community support, attracting donations towards the community contribution and maintaining momentum behind the project,” he said.

"Today's announcement shows the power of a community getting behind something it believes in. I can’t wait to see this project get underway."

The Koroit Youth Space Landscape Design was developed following extensive engagement with local young people, families, schools and the wider community, ensuring the project reflects the needs and aspirations of Koroit's growing population.

Council will now continue planning for delivery of the funded works while pursuing additional funding opportunities to complete future stages of the project, including landscaping and playground development.
