Moyne Shire Council has endorsed a 10‑year licence agreement with Mosswood Wildlife Inc. to support the expansion of critical wildlife rescue and rehabilitation services in the region.

The agreement will enable Mosswood Wildlife to use part of the old Koroit racecourse reserve to establish a plantation to supply essential food for koalas in their care.

The reserve is located on Crown Land, which Council manages on behalf of the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. The Department is supportive of the agreement, which will now be sent for the Minister to sign off.

Mosswood Wildlife is a local not‑for‑profit organisation with more than 15 years’ experience rescuing, treating and rehabilitating injured and displaced native animals. Its sanctuary includes a rehabilitation centre and veterinary facilities supporting animals on their journey back to the wild.

The new site, located approximately four kilometres from Mosswood’s sanctuary, will significantly reduce travel time in sourcing gum leaves for koalas.

Council undertook a public notification process in line with its Property Management Policy, receiving submissions during the consultation period prior to making its decision.

Deputy Mayor, Cr Myra Murrihy said the agreement reflects Council’s commitment to supporting community-led initiatives that protect and enhance the natural environment.

“Council is incredibly pleased to support Mosswood Wildlife in this next stage of their growth.” Cr Murrihy said.

“Mosswood does extraordinary work caring for injured and displaced native animals and their dedication to rehabilitation and conservation makes a real difference across our region.”

“We’re grateful to have worked alongside Mosswood to reach this outcome. This agreement is a practical example of how Council and community organisations can work together. This licence will help them in their work while making worthwhile, practical use of Council-managed land,” she said.
