Moyne Shire Councillors today endorsed a concept design that will enhance the existing Koroit outdoor youth space.

Based on extensive community feedback, the Koroit Youth Space Landscape Design Plan includes features such as a pump track for bikes, scooters and skateboards, adventure play equipment, more trees and enhanced landscaping.

The Koroit community has led the push to identify further passive and active recreational opportunities in the town.

Mayor, Cr Jordan Lockett said it was easy to see the potential benefits for community wellbeing, and how this proposed youth space would attract more families to Koroit.

“Koroit already has the highest population of young people in the shire, and the highest growth forecast,” said Cr Lockett.

“Around 30% of Koroit’s population is aged 10-24, and we need to provide the kinds of spaces and activities they want to use, such as an epic pump track,” he said.

“The design also meets people’s requests for open space, kick-about areas, and spaces for families and young people to hang out – it’s definitely epic!”

“We listened closely to what we heard from the community through an engagement session, online survey, and active workshops with both primary schools and Council’s youth advisory board members.”

Total cost for the whole project has been forecast at $1.28 million, with a proposal to stage the works. Funding has not yet been sought for the project.

By following Council’s adopted Asset Project Management Framework process, the final design plan will help identify any potential external funding sources alongside internal investment.
