Moyne Shire Council is continuing to invest in the future of the region’s youth - encouraging students starting a full-time course of study in 2023 to apply for an Academic Support Scholarship.

The annual program offers local students the chance to receive funding towards their tertiary study costs through the $15,000 fund.

The scholarships were first handed out 25 years ago and have now supported more than 79 students from Moyne’s community in their first year of tertiary education.

Mayor Cr Karen Foster said Council was proud to continue supporting local youth transitioning to tertiary education to help them achieve their educational and vocational goals.

“The transition to university can be challenging and costly and receiving a financial boost can help support our young people on their education journey to help ease the financial pressures of tertiary studies,” Cr Foster said.

“Previous recipients have used their scholarship to assist them with not just course fees - but travel expenses, accommodation and other essential study equipment.”

“There is only a small set of criteria – applicants must be a resident of the Moyne Shire and starting tertiary education in 2023. I encourage all students to submit an application before the deadline of 4pm on March 6.”

The $15,000 fund will be distributed based on applications received.

2022 scholar, Brittany Abbott, from Kolora, used the scholarship to assist with her Animal Science degree at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga.

“Receiving an Academic Support Scholarship allowed me to have a bit more flexibility to focus on my studies,” she said.

“Receiving a scholarship of any kind is great and gives you that boost to really dig in and keep going.”

Brittany has since transferred courses to study Veterinary Science at Massey University in New Zealand.

Recipients will be chosen based on their academic engagement in VCE/VCAL, but also their engagement within the community, as well as their reasons for undertaking the course and how the scholarship will assist them to reach their goals.
