Nullawarre Kindergarten

Our Philosophy

Nestled in a diverse coastal farming community built on strong connections, Nullawarre and District Kindergarten offers a welcoming environment where every child is recognised as capable, confident, and an active, engaged learner. We recognise early childhood as a crucial time for exploration, belonging, and growth. We honour and celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds and life experiences that each child and family brings to our kindergarten community. Grounded in strong values and guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), we are deeply committed to upholding children’s rights, safety, and well-being. Our play-based approach nurtures each child’s ability to express themselves, form respectful relationships, and grow confidently. Through close partnerships with our local Primary School and wider key community stakeholders, we foster a high-quality, inclusive early learning environment where families feel welcomed and supported, and where children are empowered to thrive, both now and into the future.

Children as capable learners

We believe children learn best through meaningful relationships, play and exploration. Our program is built on a strong foundation of play-based, inquiry-driven learning that responds to children’s interests and encourages them to think, question and discover. We view each child as competent, creative and an active participant in their learning journey. We uphold every child’s right to be safe, heard, and respected and always support their voice, agency, and dignity.

Relationships and wellbeing

We build strong, respectful relationships where every child feels safe, seen, and supported. Relationships are the foundation of our practice, fostering belonging, trust, and emotional security. We prioritise warm, consistent connections between children, families, educators, and the wider community. Through empathy, responsiveness, and genuine care, we create an environment where children’s emotional and physical safety is upheld daily.

Diversity, equity and inclusion

We celebrate diversity and promote equity, recognising and respecting each child’s background and identity. We welcome and embrace our community’s rich cultural, linguistic, and individual diversity. We are committed to inclusive practices that ensure full participation for every child. We respectfully acknowledge the Gunditjmara People as the Traditional Custodians of the land and embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our curriculum, learning environment and relationships.

Environment and sustainability

Our environment is thoughtfully designed to inspire wonder, exploration, and respect for the natural world. Located in a coastal, predominantly farming community, our kindergarten nurtures strong connections to the land, changing seasons, and local ways of life. Our learning spaces, both indoors and outdoors, are welcoming, stimulating, and safe, encouraging creativity, independence, and collaboration. Sustainability, environmental awareness, and care for the Country are embedded in daily routines and projects.

Partnerships with families and community

We partner with families and key stakeholders to support and enrich every child’s learning journey. Families are recognised as children’s first and most important teachers. We work alongside families to ensure children’s cultural identities, strengths and aspirations are acknowledged and supported. We collaborate with Nullawarre and District Primary School, early years networks and community organisations to support smooth transitions and foster community-connected learning.

Educators and professional practice

Our educators are dedicated to ongoing professional learning and reflective practice, guided by the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). As a child-safe organisation, we uphold the highest child protection standards, wellbeing, and inclusive practice. Through intentional teaching and continuous assessment, we scaffold each child’s learning and support their development across all VEYLDF outcomes.

We are proud to be part of our vibrant rural community and advocate for children's rights and the importance of early learning. At Nullawarre and District Kindergarten, we create a safe, inclusive and inspiring space where children grow confidently, develop a strong sense of community and connection to Country, and begin a lifelong journey of learning and belonging.

This philosophy was developed in partnership with educators, children and families – 2026.
