Chrystel Galea - Mortlake

Artist biography

Chrystel Galea is a Wiradjuri woman and contemporary artist based in Mortlake whose mixed media practice is inspired by nature, place and everyday observation. Through drawing, painting and experimentation, she spends time observing, collecting and responding to the landscapes around her, returning to the same places to discover the patterns, rhythms and stories waiting to be told.

Working intuitively across a range of media, Chrystel's artworks invite people to slow down, look a little closer and feel more connected to the natural places they experience every day. Her work reflects a thoughtful and deeply personal relationship with the environment, celebrating the beauty and significance found in familiar landscapes.

Chrystel is currently an artist in residence through Creative Moyne's creative residencies program, where she continues to explore and respond to the landscapes of the Moyne region.

About the work

This artwork is inspired by a common scene experienced while walking around Tea Tree Lake. I chose this view because the trees, shrubs, path and low winter sun create an interesting rhythm of light, shadow, repetition and form. I created this work as an invitation to slow down and look a little closer at the land around us every day.
