Mount Shadwell Quarry

Mount Shadwell Quarry is fully owned and operated by Moyne Shire Council and provides scoria products to the construction and roadwork industries, as well as farmers, trades and the home handy person. The quarry is located 3km north of Mortlake on the Ararat-Mortlake Road, and provides products including crushed rock for roadworks, fine aggregate, dust for pipe bedding and coarse aggregate for filters and landscaping.

The quarry was established in the 1920s to provide railway ballast and as a source of material for road construction. It has operated for many years under the control of the previous Shire of Mortlake, and now Moyne Shire Council.

The quarry is open Monday to Thursday from 7.30am to 4.15pm and on Fridays from 7.30am to 3.45pm.

Fossicking

Fossicking is currently open from 10am to 4pm on the second Saturday of the Month by appointment only.

Fossickers will be required to complete a "Mount Shadwell Quarry, Moyne Shire Council. Conditions of Entry and Indemnity Form" on the day.

Fossickers should bring appropriate protective clothing for the conditions – covered shoes, gloves, sun protection (hat, long sleeves, etc.), also hammers or small picks and protective glasses are recommended along with any desired drinks and food.

While facilities are greatly limited at the quarry, there are many services within the Mortlake township that will satisfy most requirements.
