An extra set of eyes will capture important information about Moyne Shire’s local road network over the coming months.

Contractors will conduct an audit of more than 1640 kilometers of Council’s sealed local road network and around 400 kilometers of the unsealed road network which will measure the overall condition of the road surface and capture important data and images.

Mayor Cr Karen Foster said the information would help Council better plan its long term road renewal program.

“We are using this smart technology to help us in our ongoing efforts to maintain our local road network,” Cr Foster said.

“Residents may see special vehicles travelling along the road network with cameras attached – they are capturing important data which will help our teams plan our road renewal program and help us better respond to resident’s requests.

“Improving the condition of our local roads is a key area of focus for Council – Our budget has more than $10 million allocated to improving our local road network and we have secured $11 million in Federal Funding for works in the Chatsworth area.

“This audit will capture important data and mean our teams will be able to focus on the roads that need the most attention.”

Cr Foster said it was important to note the audit was being conducted on Council managed roads.

“Across Moyne there are more than 600 kilometers of roads which are State Government controlled – roads like the Princes, Hamilton and Hopkins Highways, the Caramut- Warrnambool Road, Penshurst-Warrnambool Road, Heywood-Woolsthorpe Road and even Spencer Road,” she said.

‘We can’t do any works on those roads, they are the sole responsibility of the State Government, but we are advocating strongly for increased funding for these roads and for their condition to be improved significantly.”

Information from the audit will be used to inform Council’s Road Management Plan and guide the road maintenance and renewal program over the course of the long term financial plan.

The audit is also a key deliverable identified in Council’s Asset Plan 2022.
