The Open Space Project at Railway Place, Port Fairy will see the precinct become a community hub for both residents and visitors. Key features of the project include accessible paths, free Wi-Fi zone, all-abilities play elements, and a bike repair station including stands, pump and tools to support cyclists and users of the Rail Trail.
The project is underpinned by the community’s feedback received during consultation sessions, to enhance the visual appeal of the space, and create an accessible space for visitors to sit down, relax and enjoy a coffee, and a space for children to participate in informal play.
Play elements will cater for a range of ages and abilities, including a tipi carousel to be installed on site. The proposed bike repair station, pump and bicycle-themed art elements will provide both a functional and visual connection with the nearby Rail Trail and the bike hire facility available at the Visitor Information Centre.
Railway Goods Shed
A Conservation Management Plan for the Railway Goods Shed has now been completed, that will support a Heritage Victoria permit application for exterior conservation works.
The proposed exterior works include renewal, repainting and repairs to the timber platform and doors, weather proofing of the building including gutters and downpipes, electrical installation to meet fire regulations, and replacement of tin cladding where existing materials cannot be salvaged.
Council is funding the exterior conservation works through its Annual Budget and an allocation from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.
The Open Space works at Railway Place will commence in October and are expected to be completed by the summer holiday period, subject to weather conditions.
The Goods Shed conservation works will commence following permit submission and approval from Heritage Victoria and completion of a public tender process for suitably qualified contractors.
