A new skate park for Port Fairy is still on the agenda, but further planning is required after a number of unforeseen delays, Moyne Shire Mayor Cr Ian Smith says.

Following the closure of the current site due to safety concerns in January 2021 - concepts for a new skate park in George Dodds Reserve, near Ocean Drive and Victoria Street, were released in September 2021 based on community consultation.

Cr Smith said since those plans were released, unforeseen environmental issues had arisen with the proposed site which need further work to overcome.

“Unfortunately this has delayed the project and we are looking at how we best overcome the problems we face at that site,” he said.

“Council is continuing to work through the site issues and is considering other locations should our preferred site be deemed unsuitable.

“During this delay period, there has also been a significant escalation of costs – this is something being seen in construction projects across the country and Council is not immune.

“Any change of location and increased costs would mean the proposed design will need to be changed. Of course there will be further community consultation to help shape the design and location of the new skate park.”

Council will keep the community updated on the progress of the new Port Fairy skate park as information becomes available.
