Moyne Shire Council has allocated $590,000 from Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to the Warrnambool to Port Fairy Rail Trail Committee to help upgrade the popular cycling, walking and running path’s surface.

Mayor Cr Ian Smith said the funding would allow the group to proceed with resurfacing works after a trial of different surface types using $10,000 as a separate contribution allocated from the fund.

“The rail trail is a very popular community recreation space with a dedicated group of volunteers making sure it’s well looked after,” Cr Smith said.

“Council recognises the committee’s commitment and passion for the trail and thanks them for the incredible work they do maintaining and improving the trail for the benefit of the community.

“Providing this funding is our way of supporting the important work they do and showing our commitment to high quality recreation spaces across the shire.

At Tuesday’s council meeting, after much debate, Councillors endorsed a Memorandum of Understanding between Council and the Rail Trail Committee which Cr Smith said outlines the project scope and the various requirements for the project.

“We have put in place some guidelines to make sure everyone is on the same page and a project will be delivered that offers good value for money,” Cr Smith said.

“We are looking forward to seeing works get underway soon and of course continuing to look for every opportunity to support the rail trail committee in their important work for our community.”
