Young people with a passion for the arts are being given the chance to learn how to curate exhibitions thanks to a partnership between Moyne Shire Council and VicHealth.

Expressions of interest are now open with young people from across the south-west interested in learning how to curate exhibitions are encouraged to apply.

Supported by the VicHealth Jumpstart fund, the Moyne Virtual Gallery Emerging Curators Program will appoint two young people, one indigenous, one non-indigenous, to develop an online exhibition program for the Moyne Virtual Gallery, supported by professionals who will mentor the successful applicants.

The MVG Emerging Curators Program aims to develop capacity of emerging arts and cultural practitioners to undertake activities to help develop a range of curatorial skills for virtual and real life exhibitions.

Moyne Shire Mayor Cr Ian Smith said that the program is a great opportunity for all young people to gain further experience into the world of creative industries.

“We are so pleased to offer the chance for our youth to get hands-on experience planning, curating and delivering their own unique exhibition program as part of this paid opportunity,” he said.

“The program is a great way to gain access to a network of curators, artists and creative professionals; meet like-minded people passionate about the arts; showcase your work to a local and national audience; and kick-start a career in the arts space.”

“If you are, or know of someone who is interested in gaining the specialist knowledge and skills needed to acquire a curatorial or arts management career, please make sure you submit an expression of interest.”

The program will see the successful applicants contracted to create and deliver two online exhibitions from November 2022 – August 2023.

Applications are open to individuals aged between 18 and 25 years who reside within one of the following government: Moyne Shire, Warrnambool City Council, Glenelg Shire, Southern Grampians or Corangamite Shire.

Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders are strongly encouraged to apply.

Those who live less than 2km beyond these local government boundaries, and are interested in applying are also eligible to submit an expression of interest.

Expressions of interest close 10am on October 3 and can be made online via www.moyne.vic.gov.au/Our-Community/Youth/Emerging-Curators-Development-Program
