| Information posted 6 November 2009 | | Story time sessions with an Auslan sign language interpreter will be held at the Mortlake, Port Fairy and Koroit libraries as part of the 2009 One & All Festival.
Coordinator of Deaf Access Victoria for the Barwon South West Region Erica Smith said the library story time sessions would be held with an Auslan sign language interpreter to interpret the stories for the preschool-aged children.
Ms Smith said the children really enjoyed the sessions last year especially when they learnt some signs for themselves.
“The children are taught a few simple signs during the sessions and it’s amazing how quickly they pick them up,” she said.
“The story time sessions are aimed at raising awareness with children and teaching them that not everyone communicates in the same way. We also ask them to think about how they might communicate if they were unable to hear.
“With this knowledge at least if they come across someone using sign language then it’s not unfamiliar to them.”
Ms Smith said the Mortlake Library Auslan Story Time Session would be at 1.30pm on Wednesday 18th November, the Port Fairy Library session would be at 11.30am on Friday 20th November and the Koroit Library session on Friday 27th November at 11am.
The One & All Festival is a community arts, sporting and cultural festival that aims to inform people about the issues affecting people with a disability while showcasing the talents and involvement of people with a disability to local communities.
Now in its eighth year, it runs annually throughout November and December with activities and events across five south-west municipalities.
