| Council invites you to perform on scissor lift for 24-hour event | | Do you like to perform? Have something to say? Have an act to perform, poetry to recite or songs to sing? If that’s a yes, you could become a Moyne Shire Living Monument.
Moyne Shire Council and the Moyne Arts and Culture Committee are inviting residents and visitors to put their hands up for their 1 hour of fame as part of the Living Monument project – a 24-hour event performed on a scissor lift on the Port Fairy Village Green during the Moyneyana Festival.
The event has been inspired by sculptor Antony Gormley’s live artwork One and Other where 2,400 people occupied a statue plinth for 100 days in London’s Trafalgar Square earlier this year.
The Council would use a scissor lift instead of a plinth and ask people to occupy one-hour spots for 24 hours straight from 6pm on Friday 8 January 2010.
The word ‘performance’ is really up to interpretation – the Council is keen to hear from anyone willing to occupy the lift for an hour doing whatever they want … within reason and the law of course. This could include singing, poetry, spoken word, sitting there staring at the crowd – whatever takes your fancy.
Truck drivers, teachers, Morris dancers, lawyers and even nudists took part in the One and Other project. Antony Gormley described his project as “creating a collective portrait of humanity that was richer than anyone could have imagined”.
