Mobile phones
Moyne residents can recycle their old mobile phones and batteries through a Clean Up Australia program administered by Moyne Shire Council. Through the Clean Up Mobile Phones campaign, phones are sent overseas for resale in developing countries. Phones that are too old or damaged are fully recycled with component elements available for reuse.
Moyne has recycled at least 60 mobile phones and batteries since signing up to the project. The Council gives out reply paid mobile phone satchels to Moyne Shire residents, that can then be posted free of charge to Clean Up Australia. If you don't live in Moyne and would like a satchel, phone Clean Up Australia on (02) 9552 6177.
There are an estimated ten million phones lying around in home cupboards and office desks. On top of this, Australians are buying new mobile phones at the rate of nearly four million a year. If these phones are dumped in landfill, poisonous substances contained in the phones can seep into groundwater, contaminate the soil and enter the food chain, so it’s essential these millions of unused phones don’t end up in landfill.
To set up a collection in your office or retail outlet, call Clean Up Australia on (02) 9552 6177 or visit

Used engine oil
Moyne Shire Council offers a used engine oil recycling service where residents can deposit up to 20 litres of used oil for free in special containers (pictured right) at the following sites:
Port Fairy transfer station
Mortlake landfill site
Hawkesdale landfill site
Peterborough landfill site
Macarthur landfill site
for opening times for these sites.
The used engine oil recycling program has also been extended to farmers, who can deposit up to one 44 gallon drum of used oil per visit at the Port Fairy transfer station and Hawkesdale landfill site only.
Recycling your used engine oil is a great way to ensure it doesn't find its way into the environment, where it can cause an enormous amount of damage. Used oil generally contains arsenic, lead and magnesium that can have a devastating impact on the environment. One litre of used oil can contaminate up to one million litres of water.
The waste oil collected in the holding tanks at Moyne waste sites is collected by an oil recycling company, which takes it to Melbourne for processing into products such as industrial burner oil, hydraulic oil, bitumen-based products, and is refined for a base oil for use as a lubricant, hydraulic or transformer oil.
It is important for residents not to mix used motor oil with other substances such as petrol, cooking oil or paint strippers before disposal.
