Moyne Shire Council has a wide diversity of environmental features, including unique landforms, flora and fauna. The coastal landforms include sandy beaches, rocky shores, wave cut platforms, near shore islands and large dune systems with associated wetlands. The River systems of the Eumeralla and Curdies form complex estuary systems.
Our coastal islands and dunes near Port Fairy are well known for the Shearwater colonies, with other parts of our coastline providing valuable habitat for endangered species including the Orange Bellied Parrot and Hooded Plover. Southern Right Whales can be viewed during the calving season from July to September each year along the coastline.
Inland features include the wetland systems, stone barrier country and volcanic plains formed over thousands of years through the volcanic activity in the region. Many unique plants and animals find habitat in these areas including the Brolga, Peregrine Falcons, orchids, and the threatened volcanic plains grassland communities.
Council is committed to working in partnership with the community to protect, restore and enhance the environment for future generations. Below are a number of useful environmental contacts. For further information please contact Moyne's Environment Officer on 03 5568 0555. | |
