Port Fairy Griffiths Street Bridge Closure

bridge-1.jpg

Port Fairy’s Griffiths Street Bridge will be closed to traffic for up to two weeks from 10 October 2016

Why?

The closure is necessary due to the condition of the timber bridge. Several large timber bridge bearers and decking timbers are in need of replacement. Due to the location of these timbers and in order to complete these bridge works safely the bridge needs to be closed completely to road traffic

When?

The closure will commence on 10 October 2016

For How Long?

At present it is expected that the bridge will be closed to traffic for a maximum of two weeks, however it may be closed for longer in the unlikely event that additional bridge elements are identified as requiring replacement.

What diversions are in place?

Diversions will take place via the Princes Highway, a distance of around 14km.

The focus of the work has been to replace a number of bearers (or cross-beams) which were in poor condition.

Eight of the ninety-four bearers have now been replaced.   The new bearers are a Class 2 Spotted Gum which is also treated for durability, these are 220mm in height and 180mm wide.

Decking timbers have also been removed and replaced. The new timbers are a mix of Spotted Gum, Iron Bark and Blackbutt.  There has been approximately 600 linear metres of new decking placed on the bridge. Over 700 bolts have been replaced.

The rest of this week will see the replacement of the deck, followed by a tightening of new bolts which will the allow for a new asphalt wearing surface will be overlayed.

The Moyne river bridge is one of over 200 bridges and large culverts that council manage.  This bridge is also in the top ten for its age and one of only half a dozen timber bridges being maintained in Moyne.
